Microsoft to buy Nokia's mobile phone

Microsoft to buy Nokia's mobile phone unit

3 September 2013

Microsoft has agreed a deal to buy Nokia's mobile phone business for 5.4bn euros ($7.2bn; £4.6bn).

Nokia will also license its patents and mapping services to Microsoft. Nokia shares jumped 35% on the news, whereas Microsoft's fell more than 5%.

The purchase is set to be completed in early 2014, when about 32,000 Nokia employees will transfer to Microsoft.

Nokia has fallen behind rivals Samsung and Apple, while critics say Microsoft has been slow into the mobile market.

Describing the deal as a "big, bold step forward", Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer told the BBC that his company was in the process of transforming itself from one that "was known for software and PCs, to a company that focuses on devices and services".

"We've done a lot of great work in the two-and-a-half years that we've been in partnership with Nokia, going literally from no phones to 7.4 million smart Windows phones in the last quarter that was reported," he said.

But he admitted: "We have more work to do to expand the range of applications on our product."

Priority move

Microsoft, one of the biggest names in the technology sector, has struggled as consumers have shunned traditional PCs and laptops in favour of smartphones and tablet PCs.

Critics say the firm has been too slow to respond to the booming market for mobile devices. It launched its Surface tablet PCs last year, but sales of the devices have been relatively slow.

Analysts said that the company wanted to make sure that it got its strategy right in the mobile phone market.

"Mobile is an area of tremendous potential but it has been one of weakness for Microsoft," Manoj Menon, managing director of consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, told the BBC.

"Clearly the number one priority for the company is to get its mobile strategy right. From a strategy point of view, this deal is the perfect step, The only question is how well they can execute this plan."

Ben Wood, an analyst at telecoms consultancy CCS Insight, said: "It's a necessary gamble by Microsoft to break into mobile, but given its complete reliance on Nokia for Windows Phone devices and the competitive position of Apple and Google with rival phone platforms an understandable move.

"It completely reshapes Microsoft's business pushing it firmly into hardware. But it also raises big questions about the sustainability of other firms, including HTC and Blackberry, remaining pure-play phone makers," he added.

'Tighter integration'

Nokia was once a leader in mobile phones, but the firm's sales fell 24% in the three months to the end of June from a year earlier.

It sold 53.7 million mobile phones during the quarter, down 27% on last year.

However, sales of its new Lumia phones, which run a Microsoft operating system, rose during the period.

Mr Menon said that the deal between the two companies would help to bring the "hardware closer to the operating system and achieve a tighter integration".

"This should help Microsoft make a more effective strategy to compete in the mobile sphere," he said.

Microsoft has also agreed a 10-year licensing arrangement with Nokia to use the Nokia brand on current mobile phone products.

Management changes

Nokia also announced changes to its leadership team as a result of the sale. Stephen Elop will step down as president and chief executive of Nokia Corporation and resign from the company's board.

The firm said that he would become the executive vice president of the Devices & Services unit, adding that it expected him to "transfer to Microsoft at the anticipated closing" of the deal.

The transfer of Mr Elop to Microsoft comes at a time when the company is looking for a new chief executive.

The current head of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, announced last week that he would be retiring and is expected to leave the company within the next 12 months.

Summing up his tenure at the helm of one of the world's largest technology companies, he told the BBC: "I'm pleased with what we've achieved; I'm pleased with the level of innovation we've brought to intelligent devices around the globe.

"But there's always another challenge and with this acquisition we'll take things up to the next level."

Mr Elop who left Microsoft to join Nokia in 2010, has been cited by some as one of the frontrunners to replace Mr Ballmer.

Nokia's future

The transaction is still subject to approval by Nokia shareholders and regulators.

Nokia says that once the sale is completed, it will concentrate on three key businesses - network equipment manufacturing, mapping and location services, and the development and licensing of technology.

Earlier this year, it agreed to buy Siemens' 50% stake in their joint venture, Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), which makes telecoms network equipment, for 1.7bn euros.

Troubleshooting Boot Problems

1.0 BIOS Beep Codes
It is likely that the BIOS on your
system was made by either Award
or AMI. Today, the majority of
motherboards purchased for
upgrading come with an Award
BIOS, though there are a very few
that offer the AMI BIOS as an
alternative. While Phoenix used to
be very popular, it is now rarely
found in desktop systems. Award
became part of Phoenix in 1998.
The Award BIOS actually has only a
single defined beep code, which is
emitted when the video controller
cannot be initialized. This code is a
single beep, followed by three
short ‘chirps’ in rapid succession.
The short beeps can occur very
fast, and might sound like only two,
but by listening very carefully you
should be able to discern three of
them. If this signal is given, the
video card may not be seated
correctly, or it may actually be
defective. If reseating it does not
resolve the problem, try it in a
different card slot (if available). As
a final resort, the card may need
to be replaced.
One other code that is usually
given, but not officially defined by
Award, is a single long beep that is
repeated indefinitely. This generally
is emitted when the memory
refresh fails, which could be a bad
connection, bad slot or a bad
module. Once again, if reseating
the memory modules does not
correct the problem, try a different
slot or replace the module.
AMI defines a number of beep
codes, which are too numerous to
mention. If you have an AMI BIOS,
you can get most of the
information you need from the
AMI Homepage, under the ‘Tech
Support’ section. More information
about Award BIOS’, and additional
technical information can be found
on the Phoenix website . Other
good resources for BIOS
information are The PC Guide and
Wim’s BIOS Page .
1.1 No Video Splash Screen
Check that the power cord is
plugged into both the wall and the
power supply (really!!). If the
power supply fan doesn’t spin,
either it is not plugged in, or the
power supply is bad.
Check that the 12V power plugs
from the power supply are
properly plugged in. There are
usually two plugs – P8 and P9. The
two black wires on each plug
should be next to each other (four
black wires in a row). If this is the
problem, the power supply fan will
spin but the hard drive will not
spin up.
Take out and reseat the CPU,
Memory and Video card. If any one
of these is not making good
contact, the system will not boot.
If you have your speaker
connected, you will hear a beep
code if this is your problem (check
the documentation for your BIOS
to interpret beep codes).
Make sure that your IDE cable (if
installed) is connected with the
colored edge (pin 1) aligned with
pin 1 on the motherboard
connector. If you don’t hear the
hard drive spin up, that would be a
good clue the cable is backwards.
Check the jumper settings for the
CPU – both bus speed and clock
multiplier. If this is set incorrectly,
the system may not boot at all.
Make sure that there is no metal-
to-metal contact between the
board and the case, except at
‘designated’ points. This means that
the small brass hex nuts that the
board is held on with should NOT
be used as a standoff if there is no
corresponding hole for it. Doing
this will cause a short between the
board and the case, thereby
keeping the system from getting
the proper power, and possibly
damaging the motherboard.
Check that you have filled the
entire memory bank with memory.
Pentium/Pentium Pro
motherboards use two SIMMS of
the same type (both 8MB or both
16MB), or one DIMM. They also
must be in the same bank – which
means they need to be right next
to each other in even/odd slots
(i.e., 0/1 or 2/3, not 0/2 or 1/2).
Once again, check your
motherboard manual for
requirements in regards to which
slots must be filled first, and how
many slots make a bank.
If you didn’t do this first, take the
motherboard completely out of the
case (if you have it installed before
trying to boot it) and put it onto a
non-conductive surface (perhaps
the top of the box it came in).
Position it such that you can
connect the power supply plugs,
then insert the CPU, memory and
video card. Give it one more
‘power on’ attempt. If it now
boots, then you had some unknown
contact with the case (grounded
improperly). This step shouldn’t be
too intrusive, as you were probably
going to take it out and ship it
back to the supplier anyways.
1.2 System Does Not Complete
POST
Check that you don’t have
mismatched memory in your SIMM
slots. Remember, Pentiums require
two SIMMs to make a full memory
bank (but only one DIMM), and
they must be like configuration
(two 8MB or two 16MB, etc). Also
consider that you may have a bad
memory module if you are buying
‘generic’ modules. A good clue for
this is if the system only counts up
to 640K, then locks.
If your motherboard has cache on
board (Socket 5 or 7), check that
the L2 cache jumper (if applicable)
is set properly. Again, read the
manual. Note how much cache is
soldered on board (if any), and
how much is on any COAST
module. Do NOT assume that you
know how much cache is plugged
in – CHECK IT OUT.
If the motherboard has cache on
board, turn off External (L2) cache
in the BIOS. You may have
defective L2 cache, which means
the board will need to be replaced
(or the COAST module, whichever
applies)
Set your BIOS to factory defaults
(there is usually a couple of menu
choices for BIOS defaults and
SETUP defaults). It is possible you
have a conflict in your BIOS
settings.
Eliminate all unnecessary devices
and device drivers, then boot
again. You may have an IRQ or
DMA conflict, or some drivers may
be conflicting with each other. You
can eliminate ‘boot up’ device
drivers by placing an REM
statement in front of the driver in
the CONFIG.SYS file, which makes
it a remark statement. If this turns
out to be the problem, re-
introduce devices or drivers one at
a time until you determine which
one is causing the lockup.
1.3 Operating System not Found or
Boot Device Missing
Make sure your IDE cable is
plugged in properly. The colored
edge of the ribbon cable should be
plugged into pin 1 of both the
motherboard connector and the
hard drive.
Make sure both ends of the ribbon
cable are seated firmly. A loose
cable may allow the drive to be
detected, but unreadable.
Be sure you have the 5V power
connector plugged into the drive
securely.
Check that the BIOS settings are
correct for the hard drive. If the
BIOS does not have an auto-detect
feature, you will need to find out
the correct Cyl-Head-Sect
information so the operating
system can read the drive
properly.
Check if you have a boot manager
(such as On-Track) to support
540MB+ hard drives on a non-LBA
system. This software is
incompatible with hardware LBA
and will render your device
unreadable. In this case, you need
to set the CMOS parameters for the
hard drive to NORMAL (not LBA). If
you want to use LBA mode, you will
have to reformat the drive as
follows:
Use the FDISK command with the /
MBR option. This will remove the
software from the master boot
record.
Use FDISK to repartition your
system
Use the FORMAT d: /S to format
the drive and transfer the
operating system
Re-install the complete operating
system and applications, or restore
from your latest backup.
Use the command FDISK /MBR (do
NOT use this if you have disk
manager software on your drive to
emulate LBA mode on 540MB+
hard drives). This will re-create
your master boot record without
destroying any data on the drive
(be absolutely sure to use the /
MBR switch). When you issue this
command, you will get no response
back other than a blinking cursor
and prompt.
Use FDISK to set the boot partition
active.
1.4 Keyboard Isn’t Recognized
This is usually the result of the
keylock pins being jumpered. On
most motherboards there is a 5-
pin connector labeled ‘Keylock’.
Pins 1 and 3 are the Power LED,
while pins 4 & 5 are the keylock.
You may have accidentally
jumpered the wrong pins and
locked the keyboard out.
1.5 Slave IDE Drive Not Detected
(Hard Drive or CDROM)
Be sure that the Primary IDE drive
is jumpered for MASTER, and the
Slave drive is jumpered for SLAVE.
Some drives have the same setting
for SINGLE and MASTER, but most
have a separate setting. If the
Primary drive is set to SINGLE, the
Slave drive may not be detected.
Check the ribbon cable to ensure
that the colored edge is plugged
into pin 1 on the Slave drive.
Make sure the ribbon cable is
seated properly at all connection
points.
Be sure that the 5V power plug is
connected securely.

Troubleshooting Boot Problems

Diagnosing PC bootup problems can
be the most difficult of tasks for
several reasons. Diagnosis requires
logical reasoning, which in itself
requires that the person doing the
diagnosis understand the system
events that are supposed to occur,
and in which order. Further, many
of the clues that might be available
require specialized diagnostic
equipment that the average user
does not possess. Fortunately, even
without the use of diagnostic tools,
the most common boot-time errors
can be resolved by with a little
knowledge, a few common
components and a bit of patience.
The BIOS (Basic I/O System) is the
very first program run by the PC,
and resides in a ROM chip (Read
Only Memory), which is also called
Non-Volatile memory. The BIOS
program initializes the standard
devices, such as the memory
controller, video controller, IDE
controller and floppy controller.
Using stored parameters, it
initializes the motherboard chipset,
and sets timing parameters. It also
creates an interrupt vector table
and provides a set of services,
accessible through interrupts, that
allow access to the standard I/O
devices. Following is a brief
description of the entire PC boot
process, which can be extremely
helpful in identifying and resolving
problems.
When power is applied to the
motherboard, the reset signal is
turned on to the CPU. This
prevents it from fetching any
instructions until all power supply
voltages are valid and the system is
ready for initialization.
Once the output voltages from the
power supply have stabilized, it will
send a power good signal to the
motherboard. The motherbord
timer receives this signal, and turns
off the reset signal, allowing the
processor to fetch the first
instruction
The first instruction fetched by the
processor is from address
FFFF:0000h, which is generally a
branch instruction to the ROM
BIOS starting address.
The first BIOS routine initializes
and tests the various system
controllers, which are now mostly
embedded into the chipset, and
initializes the video controller. If
there are any errors initializing the
memory or video controllers, an
error will be returned from this
routine and the system will stop.
Generally, there will be some type
of audible error signal emitted
from the PC speaker
The next BIOS routine will then will
look for any additional ROM chips
that may be installed on adapter
cards (such as SCSI controllers
cards), and run their routines.
At this point, a specific location of
memory is tested for a value of
1234h, which indicates that this is
a ‘cold’ start. A cold start means
that this is the first time power has
been applied, while a warm start
means that the reset button has
been hit (or the vulcan death grip
has been applied). If it is a cold
start, the full POST (power-on self
test) routine is run, which performs
additional tests on the
motherboard, memory, video card,
keyboard, floppy, etc. If it is a
warm start, this routine is skipped
Once the full POST routine is
completed successfully, the boot
devices stored in the CMOS area
are checked one at a time for a
valid OS loader program, which
then initializes the operating
system and will most likely return
control to the user.
Each of the tests run during the
POST routine have their own code,
which can be displayed with a POST
card that is inserted into an ISA or
PCI slot. In this manner,
technicians can determine exactly
which routine has failed, and can
determine what, if any, corrective
measures can be taken. Recently,
some motherboard manufacturers
have included an LED on the
motherboard which displays these
codes, making it much easier for
the user to determine the problem
and communicate that to tech
support personnel.
The codes and audible signals vary
by BIOS manufacturer, so it is
necessary to know which BIOS your
motherboard has in order to
diagnose any errors. At the end of
the next page, there are links to
the most common BIOS
manufacturer websites, which
contain downloadable documents
with all of the information
necessary to determine what each
error code means.
The next page contains the actual
troubleshooting process, which is
presented as a sort of ‘cookbook’
approach that outlines the various
steps that can be taken to identify
the cause of the most common
problems seen during the boot
process.

BlackBerry Messenger for Android coming soon.

BlackBerry Messenger looks like it
will be arriving for Android users
on June 27th. We have yet to see
the official confirmation from
BlackBerry, however the June 27th
date seems to keep popping up
with this latest mention coming
from T-Mobile UK. The carrier
shared the date on Twitter and in
addition to the Android release, it
looks like iOS users will also be
able to join in on the fun that same
day.
The details were on the lighter side
and the message reads as follows;
“Great news – BlackBerry
Messenger will be available to
download on iOS and Android
from June 27th!”
Looking back at the earlier BBM
related leaks and chatter and we
have noticed the previous Twitter
account that shared the date has
since been removed. We wouldn’t
expect that to happen with the T-
Mobile UK page, however we must
remember that date is still
unconfirmed until we hear
something direct from BlackBerry.
Otherwise, other recent BBM
chatter included talk of the app
being pre-loaded on select Android
handsets. This bit came by way of
BlackBerry Chief Operating Officer
Kristian Tear. The COO said “there
is interest from other handset
makers,” but unfortunately failed
to provide any specifics.
With that, BBM for Android will
allow for cross-platform chatting
however some of the initial
features will be limited as
compared to what BlackBerry users
have. Some of the missing items
will include group chat, voice
calling and screen sharing. As far
as support, BBM for Android will
be available for devices running
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
and above.
The real question here will be as to
whether BBM will receive a warm
welcome or a cold shoulder when it
arrives in the Play Store. Not to say
BBM isn’t a viable option, but
there happens to be quite a few
alternatives already available and in
use.
[Update] Looks like that T-Mobile
UK tweet has since been deleted. In
addition, BlackBerry has released a
statement saying they haven’t
“announced a date” and that BBM
for Android is “coming this
summer.” BlackBerry Messenger
It seems BlackBerry is looking to
have Messenger pre-loaded on
select Android handsets. Basically,
it is looking like BBM could end up
another piece of bloatware and
hopefully it will be a piece that is
able to be removed. While this bit
has been confirmed by the folks at
BlackBerry, there hasn’t been much
said in terms of which devices may
have BBM pre-loaded.
BlackBerry Chief Operating Officer
Kristian Tear told CNET that “there
is interest from other handset
makers.” Touching on that potential
release date, Tear declined to
comment on when BBM would be
released for Android. There was
some talk of the current user base.
At present Tear noted that BBM has
an active user base of 61 million
and that 70 percent are using it
daily.
While that is certainly not a small
number, there may be another
hitch in terms of the success on
Android. This other hitch comes
from Google. Specifically, Hangouts
which we saw announced a short
while back during Google I/O. BBM
may seem like a good option for
Android users to keep in touch with
friends and family on other
platforms, however so is Hangouts.
The other side of this story is
whether BBM coming to other
platforms will convince some
BlackBerry users to finally switch
devices. After all, we suspect there
may be a few long term BlackBerry
users that are sticking around for a
few limited reasons, one of which
may be BBM. Of course, that was
addressed by Tear who spoke about
how they (BlackBerry) doesn’t “feel
like that is a risk.” So how about it,
is anyone excited about the
upcoming launch of BBM on
Android?

How to Break a BIOS Password

Have you ever been locked out
of an old computer by a
forgotten BIOS password?
Without the password, the
computer is essentially useless.
Luckily, there are ways to reset
it. Follow this guide to learn
how.

3 Ways to Break a BIOS Password

1 Use the Password Jumper

Open your computer.
This method is for
desktop computer
users. Unplug the
power cord from the
back of the computer.
Remove the case so
that you have access to
the motherboard. The
motherboard is the
main board of the
computer, everything
is attached to it.
Be sure that you
ground yourself
before touching
anything inside
your computer,
otherwise you might
short a component.

Find the BIOS jumper.
There are dozens of jumpers on
the motherboard, so
be sure that you are
locating the correct
one. Refer to your
motherboard’s
documentation to
double-check. The
jumper covers two of
the three pins that
control the BIOS
password. The jumper may be
labeled CLEAR CMOS, CLEAR, CLR,
JCMOS1,
PASSWORD, PSWD,
etc.
The jumper is
typically located on
the edge of the
motherboard or
physically near the
CMOS battery.

Move the jumper.
To reset the BIOS
password, you will
need to move the
jumper that is covering
two of the three pins.
On most systems,
moving the jumper
over one pin will
change it. For example
if the jumper is
covering pins 1 & 2,
move it so that it is
covering pins 2 & 3.
Some systems will
reset the password
if the jumper is
removed
completely.

Turn the computer on.
After booting, the
BIOS password should
be cleared. Turn the
computer back off and
replace the jumper to
its original position.
Replace the case and
the computer is ready
to be used again.

2 Use a Backdoor Password

Determine if you can access your CMOS jumper.

Laptop users will typically be unable
to access the jumper.
If you are using a
laptop, you will need
to use a backdoor
password instead.
These passwords are
encrypted, but can be
decrypted by running
special key generating
scripts.

Turn on the laptop.

When prompted for
the password, guess
three times. This will
lead to the System
Disabled screen. Don’t
worry, the system is
not actually disabled,
it will boot up again
when the power is
reset.

Take note of the displayed number.

You will need this to
generate the BIOS
backdoor password.
The series may contain
letters as well as
numbers.

Generate a password.

On a working
computer, visit this
site and enter the code
from the laptop. The
program will generate
a password for you.
This may take a few
minutes.
Some laptops use
the serial number
of the laptop itself
to generate a
password. Refer to
the table on the
More Details section
in the above
website to see what
numbers to input.

3 Removing the CMOS battery

Open the computer.

This method only
works on desktop
computers. Make sure
that the computer is
turned off. Remove the
case from your
computer so that you
can access the
motherboard. Unplug
power cable from the
back of the computer
so that no power is
reaching the desktop.
Be sure that you
ground yourself
before touching
anything inside
your computer,
otherwise you might
short a component.

Locate the CMOS battery.

The CMOS
battery is round and
silver, much like a
watch battery.
Carefully remove it
from its housing. Wait
for 5-10 minutes so
that all of the power
stored in the
capacitors on the
motherboard can
discharge.

Replace the battery.

All of the BIOS settings
will be reset the next
time that you turn the
computer on. You will
need to reset the time
and date in the BIOS
setup menu.

Auto Shutdown

Read the following :

[1] Right click on desktop>select
New>shortcut

[2] In the shortcut window type :
shutdown -s -t 60 -c "the message
you want to display"

[3] Select Next

[4] Name it anything.
Now, double click it !
Scared ???
Nothing happened !
Remedy :

[1] Go to start>Run

[2] Type : shutdown -a

System Error Code number.

An error message alerts users of a
problem that has already occurred.
By contrast, a warning message
alerts users of a condition that
might cause a problem in the
future. Error messages can be
presented using modal dialog
boxes, in-place messages,
notifications, or balloons.
A typical modal error message.
Effective error messages inform
users that a problem occurred,
explain why it happened, and
provide a solution so users can fix
the problem. Users should either
perform an action or change their
behavior as the result of an error
message.
Well-written, helpful error
messages are crucial to a quality
user experience. Poorly written
error messages result in low
product satisfaction, and are a
leading cause of avoidable technical
support costs. Unnecessary error
messages break users' flow.
System error codes are provided to
software programmers as part of
the programming interface with
the Windows operating system . In
other words, system error codes
are predefined error codes and
error messages that software
programmers can use with their
software to tell you (the software
user) that the program is
experiencing a particular problem.
Not every software program uses
these predefined system error
codes. Some software programs
have their own sets of error
numbers and error messages.

mobile phone text and voice messaging communication service developed by Tencent in China. Clients are available for Android, iPhone , BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and Symbian platforms. Languages supported include traditional/simplified Chinese, English, Indonesian, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Russian. WeChat is supported on Wi-Fi , 2G, 3G, and 4G data networks. WeChat provides multimedia communication with text messaging, hold-to-talk voice messaging, broadcast (one-to-many) messaging, photo/video sharing, location sharing, and contact information exchange. WeChat supports social networking via shared streaming content feeds and location-based social plug-ins ('Shake', 'Look Around', and 'Drift Bottle') to chat with and connect with local and international WeChat users. Jeff Xiong, Co-Chief Technology Officer of Tencent, manages the WeChat team. Photos can be taken and embellished with artistic filters, captioned and put into a personal photo journal, and distributed to friends. User data is protected via on-demand contact list backup and retrieval to/from a cloud-based service. WeChat claims to provide a social networking platform that emphasizes user privacy and fast response performance. Registration is done via Facebook Connect , mobile phone SMS/VM, or Tencent QQ . The application was initially launched as Weixin in China in January 2011, with international language support in October 2011, and re- branded as WeChat in April 2012. It is being promoted in India via gaming site Ibibo, in which Tencent holds a stake.  The app is available in the App Store for iTunes, Google Play Store for Android, BlackBerry App World and Marketplace for Windows Phone.
